In 355 BCE Haman held a high position at the court of King Ahasuerus and forced the king to issue a decree ordering the complete extermination of all the Jews of Persia who had found themselves in that empire after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple. But Haman's plan was not destined to come to fruition. Neither he nor Ahasuerus himself knew that the king's wife, Queen Esther, was Jewish and, moreover, the niece of the Jewish spiritual leader, Mordechai. After Ahasuerus issued the decree ordering the extermination of the Jews, Esther confessed to him that she too was Jewish. The king could not allow her death, but he also could not publicly admit his mistake. Therefore, he issued a second decree: when the Jews came to be killed, they could resist. Thus, the day intended for the extermination of the Jews turned into the day of their victory over their enemies. The villain Haman was killed, and the Jewish people were preserved. The Book of Esther (Megillat Esther) recounts how the Jews of Persia resisted and destroyed their enemies on the 12th and 13th of Adar, and celebrated their victory and deliverance on the 14th of Adar.
