Failure to Launch Syndrome, Frank Yeomans, MD, PhD
Today we are talking about a rather unusual psychological phenomenon that is becoming more and more common in psychological practice every year, but its nature remains not yet fully understood. This is Failure to Launch Syndrome. So, it is a situation when "adult children live at home and are highly dependent on their parents" (Lebowitz, 2016). In our experience, children do not necessarily have to live at home, but they remain dependent on their parents and are unable to make their own lives. Frank Yeomans, MD, PhD, who co-authored all the major manuals on Transference-Focused Psychotherapy, and his colleagues at the Personality Disorders Institute, believe that this is a specific manifestation of narcissistic personality disorder. Young adults with failure to launch syndrome engage in passive, parasitic exploitation of others, and their pathological grandiose self makes it impossible to have deep relationships because of the need to maintain the fictitious narrative and/or the parasitic needs of the grandiose self. More details about "failure to launch patients", as well as the psychological aspects of this phenomenon and what they are associated with, can be found in our video lecture from our seminar, registration for the seminar is available here: https://istfp.borderline.institute/?u...
