What went wrong? Paragliding into the ROTOR ZONE!

Flying in very strong wind the pilot left the hill low in a thermal that broke up and dropped him into the crazy lee side turbulence zone. It's a great example of active flying and blocking collapses. After a terrifying workout in the rotor zone he landed OK with minor damage to his harness and a few scratches but he broke his variometer and Insta360 camera. What do you think he could have done?
