Lien is a journalist. Her editor gave her a simple assignment: write a piece about the old Ward C before they tear it down. Nostalgia. Memories. Around two thousand words. Nobody thought it was important. --- Then Lien found the notebook. Tucked under the bottom shelf of the records room in an abandoned building. The duty log of Nguyen Thi Hoa — a night-shift nurse in Ward C from 1997. --- The first pages were ordinary. Shift records, medications, patient names. Then the handwriting began to change. Margin notes appeared. Smaller. Heavier. Harder to read with every passing month. And in August of 1998, Hoa wrote: "The medications are recorded as fully dispensed to room C12 every month. But they are not reaching the patients. I checked. I am certain." --- March 1999. The last two lines in the notebook: "I can't keep looking away. If anyone reads this — please ask about the patients in room C12." --- Fifteen days later, Nguyen Thi Hoa died in a road accident on the national highway.
