Anton Talarico | Definitive Analysis | James Baldwin's "Sonny's Blues"
"Sonny's Blues" is probably James Baldwin's most widely read and experienced short story, and for many important reasons. On one hand, Baldwin weaves us through the intricate and complex life of the narrator and his younger brother, Sonny. While they gradually get reacquainted, the old dangers of Harlem loom in the distance, which creates a need for Sonny to reach out and find help in dealing with his circumstances, which includes a gripping heroin addiction and trying to make plans for a life that makes sense, one that he can keep together and that he can call his own. Also, the power of music - notably the Blues - steadily carries us through all of the commotion, as well as the silence, of our lives. Sonny has dreams of being a jazz pianist, a lifestyle that the narrator - a straight-laced teacher - seems to reject and classify as trivial and impractical. However, once the music catches hold and we recognize what is a stake - our actual lives, and therefore the stories that make us who we are - well, then, these stories need to be shared throughout generations. We owe it to ourselves. In "Sonny's Blues," the music must be played and must be shared. And everyone in the audience must listen in order to corroborate the unspoken truth: that there is surely defeat, and there is surely triumph. And both are there if we are willing and ready to listen. I hope you enjoy this installment of Definitive Analysis!
