Plight of Singapore Gurkhas; “A Missing Chapter in Gurkha History” - Suman The struggles faced by Singapore Gurkha children after their father's retirement from the force are deeply challenging. Despite being born and raised in Singapore and having invested their formative years in education there, they are abruptly forced to leave the country alongside their parents due to restrictive policies. This sudden displacement disrupts their lives and leaves them unprepared for the new environment in Nepal. Upon returning to Nepal, these children encounter numerous obstacles, particularly in accessing higher education and employment. Their inability to write in Nepali and communicate effectively with locals due to language barriers severely limits their job prospects. Despite possessing higher qualifications, they find themselves unable to secure employment, perpetuating their financial insecurity. Some families, if financially capable, may opt to send their children abroad for further education. However, this option is not feasible for everyone, and many retired Gurkha fathers are compelled to seek employment abroad, often in security-related roles in countries like Brunei through the Gurkha Reserve Unit (GRU), to finance their children's education. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that neither the retired Gurkha fathers nor their children are allowed to pursue a second career or continue their studies and find employment in Singapore, even if they have graduated from a Singaporean university.
