However, the real difference between receiving a blow or escaping unscathed lies in how you move. This essential skill is called Taisabaki (体捌き), which literally means body control. Taisabaki in karate isn't simply dodging. As Masatoshi Nakayama Sensei explains in his famous book, "Best Karate," it's about protecting your body while strategically repositioning yourself to counterattack. It's a compound action that combines defense, anticipation, and immediate response, while maintaining distance control and body balance. What is Taisabaki in Karate? Taisabaki translates as "body management," but in practice it means intelligently repositioning yourself in combat. Nakayama explains it clearly: Dodging is simply moving away from the attack. Taisabaki, on the other hand, is evading while preparing a direct and effective response. This involves strategically moving the body, taking advantage of distance, base, and hip rotation to position oneself at an advantageous angle to the opponent. The karateka doesn't withdraw from the fight, but rather repositions themselves within it with a simultaneous offensive and defensive purpose. The Basic Taisabaki Exercises According to Nakayama In the book "Best Karate," Master Nakayama shows four fundamental Taisabaki exercises. Although they seem simple, they represent the essence of martial movement in karate: First movement: pivot on the left foot, rotate the hips to the right, and step back with the right foot. This allows you to dodge a frontal attack while opening an angle for a counterattack. Second movement: same logic but to the opposite side. Here, the ability to use either leg for support is trained. Third movement: a more pronounced turn that places the practitioner in a lateral position relative to the opponent. Fourth movement: a variation on the opposite side, reinforcing symmetry and adaptation. These exercises should be practiced slowly at first, taking care of balance, posture, and the precision of the turn. Then, speed and intention are increased, always visualizing a real attack. Taisabaki Training with a Partner Once you have mastered the basic movements, it is time to train with a partner. Here, the practice becomes more realistic: The partner throws a tsuki directly to the center of the body. The practitioner must respond only with the Taisabaki movement, without using their hands to block.
