How Sir Jeffrey Donaldson's historical sex offences against children were exposed

This report contains details some viewers may find distressing. Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has been found guilty of all 18 charges in his historical sex offences trial and told to expect a lengthly prison sentence. The prosecution case, set out before a jury of seven men and five women at Newry Crown Court, was that the former DUP Leader had sexually assaulted two women when they were children. He has been remanded into custody and placed on the sex offenders' register. The two women, who both gave evidence during the four-week trial, were known as Complainants A and B to protect their identities. Donaldson was found guilty of 10 charges relating to Complainant B, the older of the two women, including one count of rape and nine of indecent assault, dating from 1985 to 1991. He had denied four charges of indecent assault and four of gross indecency relating to Complainant A, dating from 1999 to 2008. However, the jury returned guilty verdicts. Eleanor Donaldson, who faced a trial of the facts and did not participate in the proceedings on mental health grounds, was found to have aided and abetted his crimes. Her trial of facts tested the evidence but could not result in a criminal conviction. After deliberating for just over 10 hours, the jury returned to the courtroom just after lunch on Monday. At 2.15pm Donaldson was asked to stand as the court clerk asked the foreman of the jury to read the verdicts. After the verdicts were delivered, Judge Paul Ramsey expressed his “gratitude and thanks” to the jury. Before they left the room, the jury members were extended exemptions from jury service for life. • Subscribe to ITV News on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2lOHmNj • Get breaking news and more stories at http://www.itv.com/news Follow ITV News on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@itvnews?lang=en Follow ITV News on Instagram:   / itvnews   Follow ITV News on Facebook:   / itvnews   Follow ITV News on X:   / itvnews
