Maté por respeto: la cárcel se volvió mi hogar | Juan Ángel #Penitencia 183 #entrevista #México
How do you raise a child who never remembers a happy moment? At what point does someone stop defending themselves and start sowing fear? In this episode of Penitence, we learn the story of José Ángel, a man whose life has been an endless cycle of violence, abandonment, and prison. At age eight, he had to make an impossible decision: choose which of his parents to stay with, knowing that both abused him. He chose his father because he was "the one who hit him the least." 00:00:00 - 00:02:23 Juan Ángel's Testimony 00:02:24 - 00:06:00 I Chose the Dad Who Abused Me the Least 00:06:01 - 00:15:30 From Beatings to the Streets 00:15:31 - 00:32:00 Gangs, Drugs, and Violence 00:32:01 - 00:44:34 Eight More Years: Will This Time Be Different? At 12, he ran away from home. At 14, he ended up in juvenile detention. Since then, prison has been a revolving door: in, out, commit crimes, back again. Gangs, extreme violence, and respect built through terror became his language. For years, he was feared on the streets, someone who committed acts he now painfully acknowledges. José Ángel has four children with two different women. The first wife married another man while he was in prison, taking their three children with her. The second, with whom he has a 9-year-old daughter, just left him. Now he faces a new sentence of 5 to 8 more years. He says this time it's different, that something has shifted inside him. He no longer uses drugs, no longer seeks violence, and spends his days drawing in his cell to pass the time. His father, who has visited him in prison throughout his life, is now tired and aging. José Ángel is afraid he will never see him again. This episode is not meant to justify or romanticize. It speaks of the cycle of fear that transforms into aggression, of respect built through terror, of the real difficulty of breaking free from the only thing you've learned your whole life. It also addresses absent fatherhood, hope that arrives too late, and the burden of wanting to change when too many consequences have already accumulated.
