Florida woman accused in decades-long rental fraud scheme targeting landlords of luxury homes
A Florida woman is accused of carrying out a rental fraud scheme that investigators said targeted landlords over the past two decades. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, 54-year-old Turia Grantlin used fake identities and fraudulent financial documents to secure leases for luxury homes, then never paid the rent. Investigators said Grantlin moved from one high-end property to another, allegedly repeating the same scheme nearly 30 times. Court records reviewed by investigators show she has been named in at least 26 eviction cases dating back to 2005. Deputies said she used false pay stubs, fake credit reports, altered bank statements and fraudulent background checks to qualify for one-year leases on homes valued between roughly $700,000 and nearly $900,000. Authorities said Grantlin would initially provide checks, wire transfer confirmations or other proof of payment for rent and security deposits, but those payments later bounced or were determined to be fraudulent. In one case, investigators said Grantlin allegedly sent screenshots of bank accounts appearing to show balances of more than $23,000 to secure a lease on a home. Detectives later determined the accounts contained less than $10 at the time, leaving the homeowner with losses totaling more than $32,000. By the time landlords discovered the issue, investigators say she had already moved into the homes and used the legal system to delay eviction proceedings for months.
