Konnakol for Beginners by Prapancham Ravindran
Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music offers an intensive and comprehensive course in Carnatic music, covering the melodic raga system and the rhythmic language of Konnakol. Konnakol is the recitation of solkattu, the vocal syllables related to the sounds of the mridangam drum. Mastery of konnakol is a highly sought-after skill amongst drummers, percussionists and musicians in general, looking for new ways to approach composition and improvisation. Practicing konnakol can greatly improve your awareness of time and subdivision. Prapancham Ravindran, a mridangam master, has been performing and teaching Carnatic percussion for 25 years, and for the last one year at SAM. In this lesson, Prapancham demonstrates a basic konnakol pattern in Adi Talam (2 bars of 4/4).
