Ndrilou Island Fish Cold Storage Facility | Supporting Local Fisheries in Manus Province, PNG
The Ndrilou Island Fish Cold Storage Facility is a community-driven fisheries project aimed at strengthening livelihoods for coastal and island communities across Manus Province, Papua New Guinea. Supported by the National Fisheries Authority (NFA), the project forms part of a broader initiative to develop sustainable coastal fisheries and improve market access for local fisherfolk. The concept for the project was first discussed in 2013, but it was not until 2022 that the initiative gained renewed momentum when the Ndrilou Ward Councilor raised the proposal with the National Fisheries Authority. Through collaboration between the community and government partners, construction of the facility has now become a reality for the people of Ndrilou Island. Once completed, the fish cold storage facility will serve as a central collection and storage point for locally caught fish, allowing fishermen and women to preserve their catch and access better market opportunities. For many island communities across the Seadler Bay area, fishing is a primary source of livelihood. However, fluctuating demand and competition from other fishing communities often affect sales. The new facility aims to address this challenge by improving storage capacity and enabling the community to sell and potentially export fish products. The project is being facilitated through the local Fishing Cooperative Society, with community leaders working closely with the National Fisheries Authority to ensure the facility supports long-term economic opportunities for local fisherfolk. It is also one of eight cold storage facilities planned across Manus Province as part of the coastal fisheries development program. This documentary highlights the story behind the project, featuring perspectives from community leaders, cooperative members, and local residents. It captures the importance of fisheries to island livelihoods and explores how infrastructure like the Ndrilou Cold Storage Facility can help strengthen economic resilience and sustainable resource management in Manus Province.
