Treatment Plan for Taro, the Western Lowland Gorilla Thank you for your continued support of the Japan Monkey Center. We would like to provide an update on the health condition and treatment plan for “Taro,” the male Western Lowland gorilla in our care. Born in April 1973, Taro is currently 52 years old and is the oldest male gorilla in Japan. As he has aged, his activity level has decreased, and he spends more time sleeping during the day. Although he occasionally exhibits symptoms such as joint pain or loss of appetite, he is generally in good health. Taro has not suffered from any major illnesses until now, but over the past few years, a noticeable swelling has appeared around his testicles, leading us to suspect a testicular tumor based on his symptoms. While there are several possible causes, testing to confirm whether it is a tumor and any potential removal would require anesthesia. However, since our facility has never performed health checkups under anesthesia on gorillas before, our staff’s experience and knowledge regarding Taro’s reaction to anesthesia are not yet sufficient. Furthermore, for an elderly gorilla, prolonged anesthesia for examination or treatment poses significant life-threatening risks, and postoperative care is challenging. Additionally, in this case, there is a possibility that the tumor has already metastasized, making the removal of the mass around the genital area potentially ineffective. Based on the above considerations and after extensive discussions among relevant parties, we have decided not to pursue active surgical treatment at this time and to proceed with oral medication instead. Currently, there is a wound around Taro’s testicles that appears to be an abrasion. We are monitoring this condition through the application of topical medication and oral treatment. Please be advised that, depending on the situation, we may need to suspend public viewings at short notice, and there is a possibility that his condition could deteriorate rapidly. Our primary care policy moving forward is to minimize Taro’s discomfort and maintain his current lifestyle for as long as possible.
