Stalin's skyscrapers are the most mythologized buildings in Russia: underground floors beneath Moscow State University, secret tunnels, Metro-2, the "places of power" on which they supposedly stand. Everyone has heard at least one of these stories. In this episode, we look at the skyscrapers differently—not as symbols of Stalin-era architecture, but as engineering enigmas. Ayrat Bagautdinov, architectural historian and director of the company "Through the Eyes of an Engineer," examines seven main legends about the skyscrapers—one for each building. Behind each legend lies a real engineering, architectural, or political story.
