In this video, IFT researcher and Fermi-LAT collaboration scientific coordinator Miguel Ángel Sánchez Conde analyzes in depth a recent study by Professor Totani (University of Tokyo) that has generated enormous media buzz by suggesting a possible detection of dark matter using gamma rays observed by NASA's Fermi telescope. Throughout the video, we explore why dark matter candidates known as WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles) could produce this type of radiation, what difficulties exist in distinguishing it from conventional astrophysical sources, and what problems current models present in interpreting the observed excess as an unequivocal sign of dark matter.
