LEWES PRIORY | A Medieval Cluniac POWERHOUSE in SUSSEX
Lewes Priory, located in East Sussex, was once one of the most important and wealthiest monasteries in medieval England. Founded in 1078 by William de Warenne, the 1st Earl of Surrey, and his wife Gundrada, it was dedicated to St. Pancras and established as a Cluniac priory – the first of its kind in England. The priory grew into a magnificent complex, featuring an elaborate church, cloisters, chapter house, and living quarters for the monks, making it a major religious and cultural center during the Middle Ages. Its influence extended across the region, supported by generous endowments and royal patronage. The priory’s prosperity came to an abrupt end during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII in 1537, when it was dismantled and much of its stone repurposed. Today, only fragments of the original buildings remain, scattered across a peaceful public park, but these ruins still hint at the priory’s former grandeur. Visitors can explore the evocative remains, view the reconstructed layout, and imagine the life of the monks who once lived and worshipped here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Consider Supporting us on: 📌 Youtube Memberships: / @pinnedonplaces 📌 Instagram: / pinnedonplaces 📌 Website: https://www.pinnedonplaces.com 📌 Patreon: / pinnedonplaces --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music Credit(s): 📌 Epidemic Sound 📌 Like the music?
