The oldest song: Hymn to Nikkal - MUSIC FROM UGARIT - Syrian pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai
The history of music in Syria can be traced far back. We have writings and documents from the Kingdom of Mari dating back to 2600 BC, which indicate that music was flourishing and had an important role in society. Those documents demonstrate that the Kingdom of Mari knew of both string and percussive instruments (an example being the harp with seven strings). The archives also identify those materials which were used to make musical instruments and the organizational structure of the musicians within the royal palace. Music continued to develop in Syria, evidence of which is the fact that the oldest musical note has been found in Ugarit. We invite you to learn about the history of this unique composition and to sing it with us, as the people of Ugarit did in 1400 BC
