How to Choose Your Background Colour

Choosing a background colour can be a very daunting thing. There are many theories out there, but I have come to understand a few fundamentals using basic colour theory. What you choose will ultimately come down to what you want your painting to convey. So in this tutorial I discuss and demonstrate a handful of basic but powerful concepts to think about when deciding on your background. This is a shortened version of the full tutorial which is 45 minutes long. It contains examples from artists I admire as I discuss how they have created their backgrounds. I refer to my favourite colour theory book, The Oil Painters Colour Handbook by Todd M Casey through out the tutorial and show in-depth analysis of the colour theory behind my ideas.
