July 20–26: “To You We Turn Our Eyes” 2 Chronicles 14–20; 26; 30 The kingdom of Judah was surrounded. The armies of three powerful enemy nations were advancing simultaneously, ready for battle. In that desperate moment of need, Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, turned to the King of heaven and earth. He gathered his people at the temple and prayed. He acknowledged his human weaknesses and pleaded for deliverance. In response, the Lord promised His protection: “Do not be afraid or discouraged” (2 Chronicles 20:17). We may not have an invading army at our gates threatening to destroy us, but sometimes we feel surrounded by adversity and evil. Our path to deliverance is the same one Jehoshaphat sought, and our prayer can also be like his: “O our God, […] we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (2 Chronicles 20:12).
