What is difference between Basmati PB-1885 and PB-1985 || Crop Reformer
Basmati PB-1885 and Basmati PB-1985 are both modern basmati rice varieties cultivated in Pakistan, but they differ in maturity, plant behavior, grain quality, and disease tolerance. PB-1885 became popular earlier because of its excellent aroma and grain quality, while PB-1985 was introduced with improvements in yield stability and field performance. PB-1885 generally produces very strong aroma and premium cooking quality, which is why many exporters and traders prefer it for traditional basmati markets. Its grain length after cooking is considered attractive, but the variety can be more sensitive to lodging and some diseases under unfavorable weather conditions. Farmers often need careful fertilizer and water management to maintain quality and avoid crop falling. PB-1985 was introduced as an improved option with comparatively better plant strength and improved resistance against lodging. In many areas, it shows better tolerance to environmental stress and can perform more consistently during difficult weather conditions. Farmers also report comparatively healthier crop stands and improved adaptability in several rice-growing regions of Punjab. In terms of maturity, PB-1985 is usually considered slightly earlier or more manageable for harvesting in some regions compared to PB-1885. PB-1985 may also provide better overall productivity in fields where disease pressure or weather stress affects traditional basmati varieties. However, some growers still believe that PB-1885 maintains a slight edge in classic basmati aroma and export-quality grain appearance. The choice between these two varieties depends on farmer priorities. If the main target is premium aroma and traditional basmati quality, PB-1885 is often preferred. If the goal is more stable field performance, stronger plants, and balanced production, PB-1985 can be a safer option. Farmers should also consider local climate, water availability, disease history, and market demand before selecting either variety.
