"Sebastian's Caribbean Jamboree" ('Disney Channel Preview' from 1991) ***VHS Recording***

More VHS tapes of stuff I recorded off TV back in the 90s and wanted to share some of the footage I came across. Featured here is a recording of "Sebastian's Caribbean Jamboree" which aired as part of a Disney Channel Spring Preview in April of 1991. Back when The Disney Channel was a premium cable channel that you had to pay to have (like the early days of MTV) so it was always fun when they would have free preview weekends occasionally highlighting various movies, cartoons, and specials. This special is a personal favorite, as I always wanted to visit Walt Disney World! I've gone to Disneyland several times since childhood, but never made it to the Magic Kingdom in Florida. Maybe someday I'll be able to travel there for a magical Disney weekend! I remember watching this over and over; all-the-while, dancing and singing along! There are some slight differences between this TV special and the Sing-A-Long VHS tape that was released in November 1991. The biggest difference is the "Inside Scoop" reporter having an interview with a very nervous Sebastian before the concert begins, a quick peek behind the stage (09:04), and at the end of the concert (27:10). These segments with the reporter were removed from the VHS release. I apologize for the bad quality at the start of the video. The VHS cassette was extremely worn out. It was nearly impossible to get the VCR to play the beginning because it kept jamming. I pieced the opening credits together with clips from the official VHS release of the special. In the end, this video captured a great moment in time, highlighting the bright fashion, peppy music, colorful style, and funky dance moves of the early 90's; as well as the magic of Disney World and The Little Mermaid. The storyline revolves around Sebastian holding his first above-the-sea concert at Walt Disney World, with his friend Sam Wright as the headliner. While Sebastian is nervous about how the audience will respond, the show turns out to be a big success. The special premiered on the Disney Channel on April 12, 1991, and was subsequently released on home video on November 22, 1991. The footage for the "Under the Sea" sequence is sourced directly from "Disney's Sing-Along Songs: Under the Sea" using the same video. If you listen closely, you can briefly hear Ludwig Von Drake cheering "Bravo!" at the end of the song. Also, former Mouseketeer Matt Morris appears as one of the kids in this video. Samuel E. Wright (aka Sam Wright) was an American actor and singer. He was best known as the voice of Sebastian in Disney's "The Little Mermaid", for which he provided the lead vocals to "Under the Sea", which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Wright voiced Sebastian in The Little Mermaid's sequels and spin-offs, including "The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea" and "The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning" (the latter being his final voice role), and recorded several albums in reggae style, among them "Sebastian from The Little Mermaid" and "Sebastian: Party Gras!".
