Presider: Fr. Justin Lopina Parish: St. Joseph Choir: Spirit Voices Text from the Gospel and Homily The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, o Lord. At that time Jesus exclaimed: "I give praise to you, father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the little ones. Yes, father, such as been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my father. No one knows the son except the father, and no one knows the father except the son and anyone to whom the son wishes to reveal him. Come to me all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy and my burden light." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. All right well for today my homily is going to be about one word. You gotta do that every once in a while. A very familiar gospel reading. We've all heard that one plenty of times especially at funerals. We hear Jesus say that classic line, "i am meek and humble." and those two words are at the top of my list of words that get a bad rap these days. When a modern-day American uses the word meek, almost certainly a negative connotation. If you look it up the primary definition of meekness is to be excessively submissive and spineless. Not the way I'd describe Jesus Christ or a real disciple of Christ. But the real definition the real original biblical meaning of the word, is very different. Is to be calm and subdued even when provoked. So, in other words it's having the ability to be in control of yourself even when you're facing stress, a crisis or any other external pressure of some kind. Good quality for a person to have in life. And I like what one person used, he was reflecting on this, he said, meek souls are not passive and they're not weak. They're decisive. A meek person will do the right thing without needing an assurance or a guarantee before starting. Meek people do their work and they do it promptly. Likewise, a meek person will correct themselves before needing to be corrected by others. You're thinking with meekness when you say to yourself, " I didn't handle that situation as well as I could have. I should probably apologize and strive to do better next time." that's meekness. That's absolutely a virtue. In life. But here's the trick. It has to be real. It has to be lived authentically. Meekness is one of those things you cannot be performatively meek. It cannot be faked long term. But if meekness is authentically a part of you, you have a real advantage because when the trials and challenges of life come, and they always do, it is the meek who refuse to spiral in panic but remain calm and collected and that gives them the power to act instead of react. And that is something not even the rich and the powerful can manage assuming of course that they're motivated by pride instead of humility. So please keep that in mind next time you hear the word meekness. And Jesus Christ was not being ironic or sarcastic when he said blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
