Many tie flies mechanically, without real understanding what each wrap means to the fly. This is a book that made me rethink and access my tying from a different angle. It helped me and i believe it may do the same to you. The Feather Mechanic (A fly-tying philosophy) is a book with new approach, it teaches people to think rather than copy. Very interesting, exciting way of telling people why certain things work. It explains why certain things are done in certain way so that reader can understand the logic behind specific way of tying. It does have some step by step patterns which are more like guidelines than recipes. one has to follow, in fact, its all but recipe book. Hand written instructions, drawings, personal fishing stories that back up and reinforce the logic behind the fly, make it very warm and more intimate. Which in turn, makes this read very light and at the same time very informative and educational.
