Bellringing at Manchester Cathedral

In the bellringing world, Manchester is famed for the superb ring of 12 bells it has in its Town Hall. However, it has several other good rings of bells, including the ring of 10 at the Cathedral & Parish Church of St Mary, St Denys & St George. The bells here were all cast by Gillett and Johnston of Croydon in 1925, and the tenor weighs 27-3-6. (For the non-ringers here who have no idea about hundredweights, quarters and pounds, the largest bell weighs 1412kg.) The ringing here was taken on the NUA in 2012. The NUA (Northern Universities Association) is an annual weekend of ringing, organised and hosted by student ringers at a Northern University (anywhere between Warwick and Newcastle-upon-Tyne), and featuring a mostly student attendance. This explains the youthfulness of the ringers here and also shows that ringing is by no means an old persons hobby. The NUA features general ringing at about 10-15 belltowers in and around the host city over the 2 days, and also includes a striking competition, a pint-downing competition and a ceilidh dance. There is also a southern counterpart to the NUA, called the SUA (no prizes for guessing what it stands for). The method in this video is Grandsire Caters, a very popular method for 10 bells.
