The difference between studying scales and playing jazz | Analyzing Hank Mobley Many musicians spend years studying scales, modes, and arpeggios, but when it comes time to improvise, they feel that the solo lacks direction, doesn't tell a story, and doesn't sound like jazz. But ultimately: is playing scales really improvising? In this class, I analyze a section of Hank Mobley's solo in "There Will Never Be Another You" to show a different way of thinking about improvisation. The scale is an important tool, but it's just the vocabulary. True improvisation happens when you learn to transform those notes into phrases with musical intention. An analysis for those who want to move beyond mechanical study and begin to understand how great jazz musicians think.
