“To Chi Ka” by Kazumi Watanabe(渡辺香津美「ト・チ・カ」)

I hope you enjoy this charming composition by the beloved jazz legend Kazumi. “To Chi Ka” is both a standalone piece and title track from Kazumi's groundbreaking 1980 jazz fusion album. Recorded in New York City alongside an all-star cast of musicians, the album blends elements of jazz, rock, and traditional Japanese music. “To Chi Ka” holds personal significance for Kazumi, as it was inspired by his dog, a Hokkaido Inu breed. The composition’s gentle rhythms and harmonious melodies evoke images of tranquility and introspection, making it a memorable piece in his discography. When I play this piece I picture ToChiKa lying in the sun and looking out the window :) “To Chi Ka” was a wonderful suggestion from a dear Japanese fan, and this arrangement is a blend of Kazumi Watanabe’s original and my own, shared with the kind permission of Hilltop Studio, Jun Abe and Koko Tanikawa. Sadly, Kazumi suffered a serious health crisis last year, so this performance is dedicated to him—with heartfelt wishes for his recovery—as well as in memory of his beloved dog, ToChiKa. Recorded in Kyoto on my recent tour of Japan.
