Ghazouani also sought to improve the image of the country's monetary system and requested recommendations on how to remove it from the classification imposed on the system during the final days of the previous president's term, which prevented Mauritanian banks from conducting currency exchange transactions with American financial institutions. To make matters worse, large amounts of US dollars have appeared within Mauritania's central bank reserves, in addition to massive cash transfers, some of which have been frozen under new international transparency and anti-money laundering regulations. We must also add the recent report by the UN Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Slavery, Tomoya Obokata, which called on the authorities to take urgent measures to accelerate the implementation of anti-slavery legislation in Mauritania and address the social obstacles hindering its implementation.
