The 6,825-tonne Sewol ferry had sailed from the western port of Incheon the previous evening before running into trouble some 20km (13 miles) off the island of Byungpoong. Of the 450 passengers on board the ferry bound for Jeju, 325 were secondary students from Ansan, a city south of the capital Seoul.
