Huay Mae Sai Waterfall (also spelled Huai Mae Sai) is a hidden, two-tier natural waterfall located inside the Lam Nam Kok National Park in the Mae Yao subdistrict, roughly 20 kilometers west of Chiang Rai city center. Known for its peaceful jungle setting, it features a 15-meter tall cliff where fresh water flows into two plunge pools perfect for swimming Key Highlights Two Scenic Tiers: The first level is reached via an easy stone staircase. The path to the second tier becomes significantly steeper and more adventurous. Natural Plunge Pools: Clear, refreshing mountain pools sit at the base of the tiers, making it a highly popular spot for swimming and cliff jumping. Off-the-Beaten-Path: Unlike major commercialized hubs, this spot sees limited tourist activity and stays largely uncrowded, especially on weekdays. Essential Visitor Information Cost: Admission is completely free, and there is plenty of room at the vehicle parking area. Opening Hours: The falls are generally accessible daily from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM. Hiking Difficulty: Very easy 700-meter walk from the main parking lot. Footwear with a reliable grip is highly recommended due to damp, rocky trails. Best Time to Visit: The most ideal months are October to January when the weather is cool and the water is crystal clear. Connectivity Notice: Be prepared for no mobile phone signal once you enter the immediate area of the waterfall. Getting There Because public transportation does not route out here, you will need to arrange your own vehicle. 1. Scooter or Bicycle: Rent a motorbike (approx. 160–200 Baht/day) or a bicycle from Chiang Rai. 2. The Route: Take Route 1207 heading west out of Chiang Rai. You will pass through scenic rice fields and Akha/Karen hill tribe communities like Ban Mae Yao and Ban Cha Lae. 3.
