How to Brain Tan a Deer Skin (Hair-On Method)

In this video I demonstrate the traditional brain tanning method for a deer skin, working toward a soft hair-on pelt. The process includes: Scraping the hide in a frame using a flint scraper Preparing and applying a warm deer brain solution Massaging the brain mixture into the fibres Preventing rawhiding and encouraging softness Reviving a hide that has been left unfinished for months I also discuss common concerns about salting and freezing hides, and alternatives such as using eggs or adding tallow to the brain mixture. Brain tanning works by breaking down the collagen fibres within the skin, allowing it to remain supple rather than dying stiff. Along the way, I share a story from my childhood while working the hide.
