The Cape Wrath Trail - One Amazing Week.
Spent one amazing week solo backpacking and camping on the Cape Wrath Trail. It is considered to be one of the most challenging and difficult long distance backpacking hikes in the UK. It is an unofficial, unmarked and magnificently challenging route for experienced long-distance backpackers, the Trail passes through some of Scotland's most spectacular landscapes. However I believe it should be called the Cape Wrath Challenge as it will challenge you both mentally and physically. It will challenge your fitness, mental fortitude, hill skills and gear selection unlike anything you may have done before. Due to time restraints I had decided to spend 7 days backpacking the Southern Section of the trail with one rest day in the middle. My hike would start from the Corran Ferry crossing and finish up at the small village of Ullapool on the shores of Loch Broom. This was the last section of the CWT I had still to complete having already walked the northern section southward from the Lighthouse to Ullapool and having to pull out due to blisters last year. It normally takes 2-3 weeks to cover the 230-miles through the highlands of Scotland. Most will usually start from Fort William and finally ending up at the Cape Wrath lighthouse which is the most north westerly point in the whole of the UK. The terrain and weather can make travel on the trail difficult day to day and good navigation skills are a must. Many of the sections involves multiple steep ascents and descents which can be difficult, often in remote areas of the highlands with no visible paths or routes.
