View the water city of Hagi from both the river and the sea. The approximately 40-minute sightseeing boat course begins at Shizuki Bridge next to the ruins of Hagi Castle. The boat heads out onto the Hashimoto River, passing views of Hagi Castle Town and the Horiuchi Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, both of which were registered as World Heritage Sites in July 2015. Once entering the Hashimoto River, the boat passes through a row of pine trees sandwiched between Tokiwajima and the mansion that served as the setting for "Tsuribaka Nisshi 12." The boat heads to the former Tanaka Villa, a part of the Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings with its white walls and the Heian Old Pine Grove. At the former Tanaka Villa, make a U-turn and enjoy views of Tamae, one of the Eight Views of Hagi. On a clear day, head straight out to sea. Nearby, at Kikugahama Beach, you'll find the "Women's Battery," built primarily by women in preparation for attacks by foreign ships at the end of the Edo period. You can also see the "Hagi Rokuto," a group of flat islands formed by volcanoes offshore. We return to our starting point after enjoying the natural and historical scenery that you won't see on a regular tour of Hagi.
