¿Qué Sucede Cuando Dejas Los Hells Angels?
If you leave what might be the most infamous motorcycle club in the world, what are the repercussions? Is it possible to leave on good terms? These are some of the few examples of people who did. Being part of the Hells Angels motorcycle club is a lifelong commitment, and according to the organization, there are no retired members. But there are cases where members have quit. Members have been expelled for breaking rules, and on rare occasions, a member decides to leave. A former Hells Angels member, George Christie, shared his experience after leaving the motorcycle club he had been a member of for decades. Christie always wanted to join the Hells Angels, and he achieved it in the 1970s. In an interview with Vice, the former member shared what it was like to be part of the club, saying, "I felt like there was really a code of honor despite what mainstream society thought. These were people I could trust. I knew if I confided in them or told them something, they wouldn't take it and use it against me." Christie said being part of the elite motorcycle club made him feel special, and that everyone accepted him with open arms. Christie spent nearly four decades with the Hells Angels, and was the leader of the Ventura chapter for 35 years. But he decided to officially leave the club in 2011. Christie's views no longer aligned with the club's activities, so he disassociated himself from them. He said, "I felt like we became the people we rebelled against, and that's exactly what I told them in a meeting when I left." As he told KNPR, the fights with other motorcycle clubs were about egos, and his efforts to make peace with rivals were met with resistance. Christie took the steps to formally leave the Hells Angels. He spoke with the members, explained his reasons for leaving, and gave up his patch, and it seems the members understood. The other members were apparently fine with him leaving. But a few weeks later, Christie received a call notifying him that he was, as members put it, "off the hook" with the club. There was talk that he was an informant, which, he told Vice, is not true. Being "off the hook" was difficult for Christie. It meant that members he viewed as friends and family could no longer relate to him. He compared leaving the club to a divorce, "At first, everyone wanted to be nice. They weren't happy with my decision, but they understood. As things progressed, they became aggressive, and it was difficult to bear." In 2016, Christie published a book titled Exile On Front Street: My Life As A Hells Angel... And Beyond. In it, the former Hells Angels member tells the story of how he went from being a former Marine to being part of the world's largest motorcycle club. He explains his time in the Hells Angels and what happened in his life after leaving. He was called a coward, rumors circulated about him, and he even served time in jail on a conspiracy charge, according to Gangsters Inc. But not everyone who leaves the Hells Angels has the same experience as Christie. Believe it or not, there are those who were able to leave the club on good terms. One of them is David Labrava, who rose to fame for playing Happy Lowman in the crime series Sons of Anarchy and later in Mayans. According to One Percenter Bikers, Labrava was initially hired as a technical advisor for the accurate portrayal of a motorcycle club, but after meeting with the series' creator, he was given a role. Labrava was a member of the Oakland chapter of the Hells Angels. In 2008, he was arrested for misdemeanor drug possession. After years in the club, he decided to leave in 2019, announcing his departure in an Instagram post. "I want to say that I am no longer a member of the largest motorcycle club in the world, The Hells Angels M.C. The only club I am a member of now is the Human Race." Labrava went on to say that he left on good terms and that it was his own decision, adding, "I'm no longer a patch holder. I'm no longer part of the patch holder set. I'm now what's considered a civilian." Labrava thanked the Hells Angels for his time with them, and it appears his departure was cordial.
