Shinobue Flute EMBOUCHURE Method Straight From Japan!!!
In terms of embouchure, one thing in common between all the great shinobue flute players is that their lips and cheeks look very relaxed. The method I share in this video is taught by my shinobue teacher, Mr. Bunta Satoh, straight from the Tsugaru region of Japan, and it helped me to relax my embouchure and obtain a richer and fuller tone. The method also covers blowing the air into shinobue and where the breath should originate to keep the cheeks/lips relaxed. ***Please don't forget to ROLL OUT the shinobue flute a little bit after placing the shinobue on your lower lip from your palm in this method.***** At first, it might be difficult for you to make a sound on shinobue with the "Ho" position I describe in this video, and you might be able to make a sound only when you are doing "Foo". But I recommend "Ho", because, with the "Ho" position, your jaw drops, and you create ample space in your mouth, resulting in a much richer sound. So keep trying!! :D I have never studied with a well-known shinobue performer and teacher, Mr. Yasukazu Kano, but he talks about opening the jaw in his excellent shinobue tutorial video (in English!!) • SHINOBUE KANO METHOD ~ Fundamentals . I believe my teacher's "Ho" position and Mr. Kano's "Open Jaw" aim at the same thing, just described differently. Obtaining the correct embouchure has been the most challenging part of learning how to play the shinobue flute. I'm a grown woman and feel like I'm a pretty calm and drama-free person, but practicing for the proper embouchure made me cry twice since I started learning to play shinobue!! I felt like I was ready to sell my soul to the devil if I could just get the proper embouchure!!!!! Could someone here relate?? (Maybe not, LOL!!) Nothing feels better than when the breath goes right into the shinobue without feeling "stuck" and makes the entire shinobue resonate with an open sound. I hope the method shared in this video will help you get that incredible feeling!!! ****Chapters****** 00:00 Intro, Method comes from Bunta Sensei 00:27 Take your left palm, blow air saying "Ho" 01:27 Place the mouth hole where you felt the air 01:40 Bring shinobue lower edge of mouth hole to lower lip 02:14 All the great shinobue players have a relaxed embouchure 03:00 Roll out the shinobue a little bit 03:24 The breath starts at the core of your body, not the mouth 04:32 Think "Hohhhh" as you blow the air 05:24 Review ***For a free shinobue buying guide and a list of free online shinobue tutorials from Japanese shinobue masters that are easy to understand for non-Japanese speakers, please visit saitomusic.com/japanese.*** 🇯🇵 Born and raised in Yokohama, Japan, I play Shinobue (Japanese Bamboo Flute), Koto (6 Ft. 13 string instrument), piano, sing and compose.
