The TCP/IP protocol is, today, a given. Few people ever think about a time when it wasn't commonplace. But head back to 1993, when Windows for Workgroups 3.11 was making a huge splash in enterprise networking, and you'll see how computing and networking technologies have evolved together. That version of Windows rode on top of DOS, and its RAM was capped under 1MB. It worked as a shell application, passing all interactions as commands down to DOS. It boasted double the file access at 32 bits — a big deal at the time. And networking was more and more important: the NetBIOS stack was developed, along with the P2P protocol NetBEUI. But Winsock packages were becoming popular as more people realized they wanted TCP/IP networking rather than simply P2P.
