Three fundamental footwork patterns that all fighters should know. Moving in and out by an inch to set up a rock step pivot or a walking step pivot. “Footwork” is one of the most misused and abused terms in combat sports, martial arts training, and fighting in general. Good “footwork” does not mean pretty looking graceful movements of the feet- it means putting your feet in the correct position to use a particular technique. Every stand up technique has a footwork pattern associated with it- whether we talk about striking, grappling, boxing, judo, Muay Thai clinch fighting, kicking, punching, you name it- those techniques have their own footwork patterns.
