🎙️ Childless Love: Is Being Childfree a Problem, Doctor? 🎙️ It's not easy to refuse motherhood when society as a whole pushes people to have children. While this decision is supposedly deeply personal, it's actually a political one, and it's worth sharpening your arguments. Paradoxically, no justification is required from those who make the opposite choice, as if it were perfectly natural. But refusing motherhood seems to run counter to the image that associates children with happiness and family with a certain self-fulfillment, a certain personal and social success. While 12% of French people will not have children, fewer than 5% are making this choice voluntarily. These are the Childfree, or SEnVol, short for "voluntarily childless," as Charlotte Debest prefers to call them. A sociologist, she believes the figure is stable and the phenomenon somewhat over-publicized, but she has studied its underlying causes and is here to discuss it with us. 👤 Charlotte Debest holds a doctorate in sociology (thesis completed at Paris 7 and INED), is a lecturer at Rennes 2 University, and an adult education trainer at several institutes. After completing her doctorate on choosing a childless life (published by Presses Universitaires de Rennes in 2014), her research and work focus on the sociology of the family, social and gender norms, the mechanisms of socialization and the reproduction of discrimination, parenthood, and social inequalities. _____________________________ The Spring of Famous Women 2021 - Season #2: Love They got married, lived happily ever after, and had lots of children... This dissonance has become even more pronounced lately, giving the impression that we are going through a crisis. The ways in which couples form, questions of exclusivity, heterosexual norms, the pressure to reproduce, the lowering of the tolerance threshold for violence and all forms of male domination, the definition of the boundaries between love and friendship… these are all subjects being questioned by our world in transition, a world where there is room for maneuver… and that's no coincidence. The idea that love has something to do with gender inequality is not new. It is a central question of feminism, and our era, in turn, offers new interpretations, which this second season of Printemps des Fameuses in 2021 modestly seeks to reflect. The subject is vast.
