Mamod working steam car model - Part One
Just a quick review of a Mamod working team car model that I've had since 1982. Found it in the loft during a tidy up so decided to put together a video in two parts. This part describes the model and part two shows it working as a real live steam model. Mamod made other working models such as steam truck, traction engines and several stationary engines which powered accessories such as a rock hammer. This one however is the steam car which is inspired by cars of the early 1900's to the 1920's. I don't think it's based on any one car but inspired by the generic shape of cars of the time. This particular steam model was a present back in 1982 but the style goes back much further as Mamod were making these long before then in various colour schemes etc. This car really needs a smooth surface to run on (outside only!) as the power gets sapped by the various belt runs from the crank to the rear wheel. Only one of the rear wheels is driven - the other is a free-wheel so hence the smooth surface as there is no rear suspension. Also the correct solid fuel should be used otherwise boiler pressure can be too low to generate power needed to move the car. Likewise the wrong fuel could generate too much heat and risk damage to the model. Due to the nature of the model it should only be used outdoors as there is a naked flame risk and a risk of burns or scalding. The solid fuel tray has to be placed squarely under the boiler housing otherwise it can fall out or drop burning fuel pellet onto the ground - hence the reason not to use it indoors! Also vitally important that the boiler condition is checked especially the pressure valve/filler plug. It should move easily against spring pressure. DO NOT USE IF THE VALVE IS SEIZED OR STICKING otherwise excess steam pressure will not be vented and there is a risk of sudden failure of the model or personal injury. Apart from the common sense safety issues, this is a great educational collectible which will provide years of fun use or make an impressive static display model.
