Dedicated to God: Who Really Has Your Heart in Recovery
Set the Sail for Recovery and Sobriety | A.W. Tozer — Dedication to What? Who or what truly has your heart? Many of us in recovery spent years living dedicated lives—but dedicated to addiction, fear, shame, codependency, compulsive behavior, resentment, or the desperate need for approval. We gave our time, energy, thoughts, relationships, and choices to things that could never heal us. In this Sacred Sobriety devotional, we explore A. W. Tozer’s powerful chapter, “Dedication to What?” from The Set of the Sail and examine what it really means to live a life wholly dedicated to God. Check out the full series - Podcast here: • A.W. Tozer – The Set of the Sail | Sacred ... Tozer warns that dedication has become a common word stripped of its sacred meaning. We speak of being dedicated to our jobs, families, careers, churches, causes, and even recovery. These commitments may be good, but none of them can take the place that belongs to God alone. Jesus gives us the central challenge: “No one can serve two masters.” — Matthew 6:24 Recovery is not simply about giving something up. It is about deciding whom we will serve. Step Three calls us to make a conscious decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God. Christian recovery takes that surrender even deeper: we dedicate ourselves to our Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ and allow Him to direct our thoughts, choices, relationships, recovery, and future. This devotional considers the difference between dedication to sobriety and dedication to the God who gives us strength to remain sober. Meetings, sponsors, recovery tools, and accountability are important, but they cannot become substitutes for abiding in Christ. Sobriety is not our Savior. Jesus Christ is. We also explore the D.E.D.I.C.A.T.E. acrostic: D — Decide Whom You Will Serve E — Examine Your Heart Honestly D — Deny the Old Master I — Invite God into Every Area C — Crucify Self-Will Daily A — Abide in Jesus Christ T — Turn Your Will Over to God E — Engage in Faithful Obedience Whether you are walking through addiction recovery, codependency, emotional sobriety, a crisis of faith, shame, fear, compulsivity, or spiritual exhaustion, this message invites you to ask one honest question: What does my life reveal about the master I am serving? Dedication to God does not mean perfection. It means honest surrender, faithful return, and a willingness to place every area of life into His care. A. W. Tozer wrote: “No one has any true right to claim my life except the One who gave His own life for my redemption.” Set the sail of your life toward Christ. Let His truth become your compass, His grace becomes your strength, and His will become the direction of your recovery. 0:00 - Introduction 11:19 - The Sacred Meaning of Dedication 16:30 - Dedication as Daily Surrender 23:22 - Wholehearted Devotion without Destructive Extremes 27:50 - Acrostic - D.E.D.I.C.A.T.E Your Life to God 33:55 - Thoughtful Reflection | Call to Action Main Scriptures Matthew 6:24 — No one can serve two masters Joshua 24:15 — Choose this day whom you will serve Romans 12:1–2 — Present your body as a living sacrifice 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 — You are not your own; you were bought with a price Luke 9:23 — Deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow Christ Proverbs 3:5–6 — Trust in the Lord and allow Him to direct your path Psalm 139:23–24 — Invite God to search and examine your heart Lamentations 3:40 — Examine your ways and return to the Lord Romans 6:12–13 — Do not let sin rule your body John 15:5 — Abide in Christ James 1:22 — Be doers of the word Mark 12:29–31 — Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength 2 Corinthians 10:5 — Bring every thought into obedience to Christ 1 John 1:7–9 — Walk in the light and confess your sins Psalm 86:11 — Ask God for an undivided heart Philippians 2:5–8 — Christ’s humility and obedience Titus 2:11–14 — Grace trains us to live disciplined and godly lives 1 Peter 2:25 — Return to the Shepherd and Guardian of your soul Reflection Question Who or what has been receiving the greatest share of your time, attention, loyalty, and emotional energy?
