How to Thread a Sewing Machine (and Wind a Bobbin)

Jessica demonstrates how to thread a modern home sewing machine. Use this video TOGETHER with your manual, as they may be variations between machines. GLOSSARY OF TERMS used in this video: Bobbin: Small spool of thread used to create the underside of your stitch Spool Pin: Holds main spool of thread Spool Holder: Used to keep thread on spool pin Winder Thread Guide: Helps keep tension smooth when winding a bobbin Bobbin Spindle: Holds bobbin case for winding Upper Thread Guide: First point of contact for thread near spool pin Tension Disc: Adjustable plate in your machine that can tighten or loosen tension of thread Thread Take Up Lever: Holds thread between tension discs and lower thread guides. Lower Thread Guide: Keeps thread in line to travel to needle Needle Bar Thread Guide: Keeps thread in line to travel to needle Important Tips! Failure to thread your machine according to the manufacturer's guidelines will result in messy, tangled threads or machine malfunction. Lift your presser foot before threading. Keep foot AWAY from pedal OR turn off machine while threading. Always test your threading on a scrap piece of fabric. Adjust your tension so stitch lines are even on top and bottom of seam.
