In the fall of 1972, nine young men created an underground organization in the village of Rosokhach near Chortkiv, in the Ternopil region. Since childhood, they had seen raids on fighters of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, heard partisan songs at weddings and toloki, read about the national liberation struggles of 1917-1921 - and were inspired. Having heard about the struggle of dissidents on Western radio stations, they decided to join the peaceful resistance to the communist system. The group's leader, 22-year-old Volodymyr Marmus, wrote an oath with the words: "Before the image of the Holy Mother of God, in the presence of my comrades, I solemnly swear to serve Ukraine faithfully, to fight for its independence." Ten guys swore an oath in a forest clearing, among them were Volodymyr's brother Mykola Marmus, Petro Vitiv, Petro Vynnychuk, Vasyl Lototskyi, Volodymyr Senkiv, Andriy Kravets, Mykola Slobodyan, Mykola Lysyy and Stepan Sapelyak. The most resonant action of the "Rosokhatskaya group", which the participants had been preparing for several months, took place on the Day of Reunion, on the night of January 22, 1973. The guys installed four blue-yellow flags on administrative buildings in Chortkiv and hung 19 homemade posters. One of the Ukrainian flags of the majors on the famous Chortkiv Town Hall in the city center. To search for the group, the KGB attracted a large number of personnel, some of whom arrived in the village under the guise of geologists. The investigation lasted almost a year, and in the end the guys were found and convicted of conducting anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda and creating an anti-Soviet organization. The group’s leader, Volodymyr Marmus, was sentenced to 6 years in a maximum-security camp and 5 years in exile; his brother, Mykola, was given 5 years in a maximum-security camp and 3 years in exile; Volodymyr Senkiv, who was serving in the army at the time of the action, was given 4 years in a maximum-security camp and 3 years in exile. Vasyl Lototsky, who did not participate in the action, served 2 years in prison for possession of weapons. These four dissidents still live in Chortkiv and the nearby villages of Rosokhachi and Sosulivka.
