A forest fire broke out on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, in the mountain range separating the towns of Lançon-de-Provence and La Fare-les-Oliviers in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, before being brought under control overnight by firefighters. The fire occurred at the end of a day classified as very high risk in the department, marked by a persistent heatwave, parched vegetation, and a strong mistral wind—conditions conducive to wildfires in Provence. That same Wednesday evening, a second fire broke out in Rognac, requiring the joint mobilization of Bouches-du-Rhône firefighters on two separate fronts. According to available information, the fire started in the late afternoon at the Col du Télégraphe pass, in the town of Lançon-de-Provence. Driven by the wind, the flames quickly crossed the RD113 departmental road before reaching the Quatre Termes mountain range and then the neighboring town of La Fare-les-Oliviers, threatening the Guiges and Sigoise districts. The fight against the blaze continued throughout the night, primarily on the ground due to the darkness, before aerial firefighting efforts resumed on Thursday morning. The fire front was stabilized during the morning of July 2nd. According to the latest reports, the fire burned over 260 hectares of vegetation, a figure some sources suggest could reach 275 hectares. At the height of the operation, approximately 220 firefighters were deployed, supported by reinforcements from the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Hautes-Alpes, Drôme, and Ardèche departments, as well as Marseille's naval firefighters. Canadair water bombers and a Dash 8 were deployed for water drops. Nearly 600 residents were evacuated as a precaution and taken to the Jean Bernard Cultural Center in La Fare-les-Oliviers. No casualties were reported among the population. Two firefighters were evacuated after inhaling smoke; their lives are not in danger. The mayors of the two affected towns, Julie Arias for Lançon-de-Provence and Jérôme Marciliac for La Fare-les-Oliviers, activated their municipal emergency plans as soon as the first alerts were received. Julie Arias indicated that the priority was to protect lives during the night of the operation. The operations to douse the area and secure the perimeter are continuing on site. This forest fire in Lançon-de-Provence is one of the first major fires of the summer in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, which is regularly exposed to wildfires during the summer months due to drought and mistral winds.
