Sacred Shiva mantra with a roots reggae riddim. “Irie” is a Jamaican Patois word from the Rastafari tradition. It points at the highest state of being: everything is good, everything is divine, all is well in the deepest sense — the same place “Om Namah Shivaya” has been pointing to for thousands of years. “I bow to Shiva,” I bow to the consciousness within all beings, all things. Two traditions, half a world apart, naming the same truth. Three members of Soul Syndicate — Tony Chin, Fully Fullwood, and Carlton “Santa” Davis — are on this track. They recorded and toured with Peter Tosh as part of Word, Sound and Power, and played sessions with Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, and virtually every major artist to come out of Jamaica. Fully Fullwood created the “Stalag 17” bassline, one of the most versioned riddims in reggae history. On this track, that same foundation carries the ancient Shiva mantra — with “Jah Jah” and “Irie” woven through the chorus.
