The jazz clarinetist not only was one of the most famous musicians of his day, but he also became one of the most desired men around. As cliché as it might be, people tend to find musicians attractive – especially successful ones. There is no denying the fact that Shaw was one of Jazz music's finest clarinetists. During the height of his career, Shaw led one of the most popular big bands in the country. While he had numerous hit records, his best-known recording was arguably his 1938 version of Cole Porter's Begin the Beguine. Before releasing that record, Shaw and his band had struggled to gain recognition but that song ended up becoming one of the era’s defining recordings. Later on, Shaw became known as a proponent for Third Stream music – a genre that blended elements of classical and jazz forms. After serving in the Navy from 1942 to 1944, he began to focus on other interests and gradually withdrew from the spotlight. In 1954, he retired from music completely. Shaw was married eight times. Two of those marriages ended up getting annulled, while all the others ended in divorce. In addition to all of those marriages, Shaw hooked up with numerous women. Unfortunately, those that he either dated or married all seemed to form the same opinion of him. Shaw, a self-reported 'difficult man', was very controlling and abusive.
