China Is Recycling Mountains of Waste With This Insane Technology

China produces more goods than any country on Earth, from electric cars and solar panels to phones, buildings, and clothing. But all of that stuff eventually breaks down, and China is now facing mountains of waste on an unprecedented scale. Rather than simply burying the problem, China has turned to incredible new recycling technologies that transform trash into an industry worth trillions of dollars. Construction and demolition waste, the largest waste stream by weight at 2.6 billion tons in 2020, is being crushed into recycled aggregate for road bases, though recovery rates remain below 40% compared to 75% in the United States. Urban mining of old electronics reveals that a ton of circuit boards contains more gold than a ton of ore from an actual mine, with licensed plants in Fujian processing over 2,000 dead appliances daily. Textile recycling faces the nearly impossible challenge of separating mixed fibers like cotton and polyester, though a company in Zhejiang is producing recycled DMT at 99.9% purity with plans to reach 500,000 tons of regenerated fiber by 2030. Food waste in Shanghai, which made up 60% of household garbage, is being processed through anaerobic digestion to produce biogas after a 2019 mandatory sorting law doubled separated food waste collection to 9,000 to 10,000 tons per day at 99.5% purity. And for everything that cannot be recycled, China's 1,129 waste-to-energy incineration plants, with a combined capacity of 27.38 gigawatts producing 145.3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, supplied up to 7% of the country's home electricity needs in 2023, proving that even the leftovers can power a nation.
