The Soviets meant it as a stopgap, a few short years of service before the AK took over for good, so they built the SKS cheap, simple, and almost impossible for a frightened conscript to break. But the little carbine refused to leave. It tore into Americans in the jungles of Vietnam, got turned back on Soviet boys in the mountains of Afghanistan, and even had Chinese and Vietnamese soldiers shooting each other with the very same rifle.
