Perché la famiglia reale distrusse tutti i documenti del principe Alberto Vittorio!

Who really was Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale? He was the eldest son of the future King Edward VII, Queen Victoria's favorite grandson, and second in line to the throne of the greatest empire the world had ever known. Yet he died at just twenty-eight, never having reigned, never having married the woman destined for him, and with a reputation so severely tarnished by decades of rumors, scandals, and accusations that history has struggled to separate fact from legend. In this biographical documentary, Elena Rossini and Andrea Conti retrace the entire human story of a prince whom the British royal family chose to forget. From his difficult beginnings—he was born prematurely in January 1864, fragile and unexpected—to his sudden death in January 1892, just six weeks before his planned wedding, his life was a succession of impossible pressures, unfulfilled expectations, and circumstances that made him, despite himself, one of the most controversial figures of the entire Victorian era. The story addresses the major biographical issues with documentary rigor: his failed education, managed with rigid and unsuitable methods, the long voyage around the world aboard the HMS Bacchante, his years at Cambridge and in the army, and the arduous attempt to find a wife worthy of the crown. But it also confronts the darkest moments of his history: the Cleveland Street scandal of 1889, in which his name was implicated without any concrete evidence ever emerging, and the theory—born in 1970 and devoid of any documentary basis—that he was the infamous Jack the Ripper. Elena Rossini and Andrea Conti adopt a balanced approach, grounded in available historical sources and careful to distinguish established facts from the speculation that has accumulated over the course of over a century. Albert Victor is presented neither as an absolute victim nor as a morally irreproachable figure: he was a man with real frailties, raised in an environment that neither recognized nor managed them. The cognitive difficulties that his guardians attributed to laziness now correspond to recognizable clinical conditions. The most serious accusations that reached him posthumously do not stand up to scrutiny by historical evidence. What would Albert Victor's reign have been like? Would he have led Great Britain through the First World War with the same steadfastness as George V? Or would he have brought a different sensibility to the crown, closer to the common people, more open to the changes the twentieth century was bringing? These are questions that history will never be able to answer, but they are worth asking. You are invited to share your perspective in the comments: who was Prince Albert Victor for you? An inadequate heir whom fate spared the country, or a man who never had the chance to demonstrate what he could have been?
