The word "ginura" comes from Greek and means "woman with a tail." This likely refers to its long shoots, which can reach several meters. It is also called the bluebird. It blooms from spring to late fall. The flowers are very similar to dandelions and even later turn into white fluff. Many dislike their scent and recommend pinching off the buds so they don't interfere with the plant's beautiful foliage. The bright yellow flowers look elegant against the dark purple foliage. Gynura loves bright light, so it is recommended to place it on a south- or west-facing window, but it needs protection from direct sunlight in the afternoon. In winter, gynura appreciates additional lighting. During the warmer months, the ideal temperature for growing gynura is between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius (64 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit). If you can't provide regular lighting during the winter, move the gynura to a cool room (no warmer than 12-14 degrees Celsius) where it can rest. However, if you have lighting, you don't need to move it to a cool location. During its active growth phase, gynura needs to be watered generously. Moisten the soil in the pot only when the top layer is completely dry. If gynura is overwintering in a cool place, the amount and frequency of watering should be reduced, otherwise water can stagnate in the root system, which can cause the plant to rot. However, if you provide daily supplemental lighting with a phytolamp and the room temperature is above 18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit), then the watering schedule can be the same as in summer. I always use well-settled (at least 24 hours) and soft water. I use boiled water for this purpose. This removes chlorine and excess salts. Gynura enjoys this type of water and continues to grow throughout the winter. When watering, be careful not to let water droplets land on the foliage. Regarding humidity: Gynura thrives in any humidity level. Even though the radiator is turned off in the room, the humidity barely reaches 50% in winter. On sunny days, it can reach 20%. This doesn't affect the plant's growth or development. Timely watering and adequate light are the main concerns for Gynura. I consider this plant to be easy-to-care-for. Spraying the foliage with a spray bottle is not recommended, as this can affect the plant's appearance and cause dark spots. If you really want to increase the humidity, you can place the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water, making sure the bottom of the pot doesn't touch the water. Otherwise, the soil will become overly wet and the plant may die. Fertilizer: During active growth, the plant needs to be fertilized twice a month. It's best to use a complex mineral fertilizer. No additional feeding is necessary during the dormant period. Pruning. Gynura needs pruning periodically to keep the bush looking lush and impressive. Pruning is even beneficial for gynura; it accelerates stem growth and gives the plant a more interesting appearance. All you need to do is pinch off the tops of the shoots. Alternatively, you can cut a branch about 10 cm long for rooting and then form a bush with several stems. This is best done in the spring and summer. This will help the main plant cope better with stress, and a cutting placed in water will root within two weeks. All that's left to do is plant it in soil. Gynura will grow in a soil mixture of humus, leaf mold, turf, and sand (2:2:2:1). I use whatever's available at the store. General-purpose soil + 1/4 of acidic soil (we sell it under the name "azalea soil") + a little perlite or vermiculite, whatever you have on hand. Planting gynura in general-purpose soil is possible, but not entirely correct. It prefers a slightly acidic pH of 5.5-6.5. During the winter months, it's best not to repot gynura unless absolutely necessary; this is the dormant period. And in the spring, only if necessary. If the plant is cramped in its pot, you can tell if the roots are growing out of the drainage holes, the soil dries out quickly, or water immediately rushes into the drain when watering—these indicate that the roots have already entangled all available space. Gynura is fairly resistant to both diseases and pests.
