For decades, scientists have been trying to improve the effectiveness of psychotherapies for depression. Until recently, this has only had limited success. New studies suggest that metacognitive therapy (Adrian Wells, 2011) could provide the long-awaited breakthrough. The treatment approach of metacognitive therapy differs fundamentally from other therapies. While cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) puts a lot of effort into reframing negative thoughts, metacognitive therapy is not about changing the content of thoughts, but rather what we believe about our thoughts (metacognitive = beliefs about thoughts).
