The UK's most SOUTHERLY level crossing - Long Rock Level Crossing, Cornwall
Date filmed: 13/09/2022 Videos filmed between 13:49 and 14:52 Route: Cornish Main Line Between St. Erth and Penzance Stations Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barriers crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV) Location: 50.128304, -5.502293 Video chapters: Introductory cut-away shots - 0:00 - Lowering 1 (Starts at 1:01): Class 43 HST 'Castle Set' (Great Western Railway) - 3:45 Penzance ➡ Plymouth - Lowering 2 (Starts at 4:18): Class 43 HST 'Castle Set' - 5:50 Cardiff Central ➡ Penzance - Lowering 3 (Starts at 6:25): Class 802 (Great Western Railway) - 8:25 Penzance ➡ Plymouth A level crossing found down a small road leading to a car park on Long Rock Beach just outside of Penzance in a very scenic location with great views around the bay into the town and of St. Michael's Mount. This level crossing is the UK's most southerly public highway level crossing, and undoubtedly one of its most scenic, and it's used by trains taking the short run into and out of Penzance (the UK's most southerly mainline railway station). It is located right next to the Long Rock GWR train maintenance depot, and a Mk.3 carriage with slam doors could be seen sitting there on the time of my visit. At this location, it's not common to have a wait longer than 10-15 minutes for a train despite it being single track. Penzance signal box controls this level crossing and monitors it through CCTV at present. It's curious to have a crossing both next to a depot and only leading to a small car park. A lot of the boundary fencing, as well as parts of the barriers themselves here, is quite rusty and dirty because of its location literally just off of a beach. The current set-up here dates back to the late 2000s, and one of the four barriers here raises quite a lot more slowly than the other three. The audible alarm here was reasonably quiet at the time of my visit, but they're usually quite a bit louder than they are in this video as this is yet another level crossing I've gone to which has its alarms in their 'night mode' setting at a very odd time. This was despite the fact that it was the middle of the afternoon, and the alarms for some reason change between their two settings before midday. Three different lowerings are featured in this video, two of which feature shortened versions of the iconic Class 43 HST passing by here. The start of the video features a look at what you can see from here, but do please note that the camera doesn't really do it justice. Thanks for watching!
